Barcalounger

A storied American recliner name whose current execution doesn't live up to its mid-century heritage

Standard limited warranty, shorter and less generous than La-Z-Boy or Stressless, with terms that vary by retailer.

Overview

Originally founded as Barcalo Manufacturing in 1896 and renamed Barcalounger in 1941, the brand invented the first "scientifically articulated" motion chair in 1940 under license from Dr. Anton Lorenz, becoming a mid-century American icon. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2010, closed its original plants, and restarted manufacturing in Morristown, Tennessee in 2011. It is now owned by private equity firm Hancock Park Associates.

Is it worth it?

Barcalounger is worth it only for buyers who specifically want its classic, traditional club-chair styling with genuine top-grain leather and are prepared to accept a real risk of below-average long-term durability. Its heritage is genuine, but current-era reliability and support are the weakest of the premium names here — so buy it for the look, not as a buy-it-for-life investment.
