Overview

Founded by Jens E. Ekornes as a furniture-spring maker, Ekornes became Scandinavia's largest furniture manufacturer by 1977 and launched the Stressless recliner line in 1971, timed to the rise of home television viewing. It remains the only recliner brand with American Chiropractic Association endorsement and is now part of the larger Ekornes group.

Is it worth it?

Ekornes (Stressless) is worth it for people who sit for hours daily and plan to keep the chair 15-plus years — the automatic Plus ergonomic system, chiropractic endorsement, and reported longevity genuinely justify the premium, especially in the manual version. The honest caveats: only the mechanism carries the long 10-year warranty (upholstery is just 1 year), and the power version costs meaningfully more without lasting longer, so the manual is usually the smarter buy.
